What we keep, and why

Plain English, no small print. Last updated 2 October 2026.

Who we are

Between the Pages is a free, volunteer-run community project started by Daniel Alemu in Dublin. For anything about your data, email privacy@betweenthepages.irish, or use the contact form and choose “Privacy or my data”.

You need to be 16 or older to have an account

Ireland’s digital age of consent is 16. When you join, we ask your date of birth only to check this. We don’t store it. Your account records just the date you confirmed you were old enough. Anyone can read stories and light a candle without an account.

What we keep

  • From your sign-in (Google, Microsoft or an email link): your email address, so you can sign in again. We never see your password.
  • Your profile: a first name or nickname and your county or country. These are public.
  • Your roles on each story, and whether you asked to be a Keeper (that request is private).
  • Whether you want episode emails. Off unless you tick it.
  • Stories on the waiting list: the few lines you write, the county, and for stories about a person, who they are to you and your safety confirmations. Only you and the Keepers can read them.
  • Your offer to lend a hand: the skills you ticked, languages and your note. Only you and the Keepers can read it.
  • Candles: the story, the time, and the town you typed if you typed one. To stop one device lighting hundreds, we keep a scrambled (salted and hashed) version of a random device id. We also keep a scrambled version of your internet address for two days to limit candles per connection, then delete it.

What we never do

  • Sell or share your data, or use it for advertising.
  • Show anyone’s full name, address, phone number or photo without their consent.
  • Use what you tell us to profile you.
  • Send anything private to an AI. If a story owner chooses an AI first draft, it is written only from what is already public on their story.

Our promise to the people we look for

We look for people to deliver a message, never to expose them. Only a trained Keeper ever makes contact, privately and once. The found person chooses what happens next, including “tell them I’m well” or “no”, and their answer is final. We don’t take searches for children, or for anyone who may be hiding from someone.

If a story on this site is about you or your family, you don’t need an account to reach us. Tell us privately, and we’ll pause the story while a Keeper reads your message. Nothing you send is ever published.

Your rights

You can see and change your details on your account page, and delete your account there at any time. Deleting removes your profile, story roles, waiting-list stories and volunteer offer straight away. You can also ask us for a copy of your data or to correct it. If you’re unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Data Protection Commission.

Where your data lives

Accounts and story data are stored with Supabase, which runs our database and sign-in, in an EU region. Sign-in with Google or Microsoft is handled by those companies under their own privacy terms.
